Students in the Department of Black Studies may enrich
their undergraduate experience at UCSB by participating
in department honors courses as well as the College Honors
Program. Lower-division students may enroll in faculty led
honors sections which allow them to share ideas with motivated
peers and their professors in a seminar-style setting that
encourages creative thinking. Upper-division students may
design their own curriculum and develop an honors contract
which allows them the opportunity to work directly with
faculty on scholarly projects of their individual interests.
The Department of Black Studies offers its majors a rigorous
and comprehensive curriculum which has produced three of
the highest honors for undergraduates on campus in the past
five years.
The Black Studies major is at the core of UCSB's highly
acclaimed liberal arts program. A Bachelor of Arts degree
in Black Studies provides a strong foundation for careers
in education, social services, and public policy. Students
are also well prepared to do graduate work in law, ethnic
studies, or allied areas in the social sciences, humanities,
and arts.
In addition, students that have pursued an undergraduate
minor in Black Studies frequently have found it a definitive
vehicle in providing them with excellent career and educational
opportunities.
While it should be noted that Black Studies majors are
an extremely diverse group ethnically, culturally as well
as socio-economically the department strives to be a place
for students of color to find solace and assistance, regardless
of their academic pursuits, in addition to being that for
all students on campus. The department also seeks to maintain
liaisons with the various African
American Student Groups on campus.
