allysonThe Black Studies Department would like to congratulate Allyson Miller, one of two nominees from the Teacher Education Program at UC Santa Barbara’s Gevirtz School, on being awarded a 2012 Woodrow Wilson-Rockefeller Brothers Fund Fellowship for Aspiring Teachers of Color (WW-RBF). Miller is an Honors Thesis Candidate in the Black Studies major with a minor in Education and she aspires to be an English teacher. Miller is currently serving as as the chair of Black Quare. During her studies at UCSB she has served two years as Resident Assistant in the Anacapa and Manzanita residence halls. She has also volunteered at Dos Pueblos High School and La Cumbre Junior High.






abrhamAbrham Alem, one of two nominees from the Teacher Education Program at UC Santa Barbara’s Gevirtz School, was chosen as winner of the Woodrow Wilson-Rockefeller Brothers Fund Fellowship for Aspiring Teachers of Color (WW-RBF).  Alem is a Black Studies major with minors in Education and Global Peace & Security, and aspires to be a History/Social Science or Math teacher.  Alem is former Director of Education in the Black Student Union, standing president and co-founder of the East African Student Union, and resident assistant of the Black Scholars Hall; organized a student initiated outreach program mentoring high school students from the inner cities of Los Angeles; fluent in Amharic and Tigrigna. 






preciousPrecious Boone is a proud Black Studies Major with a minor is Applied Psychology. She says that her journey through the Black Studies major has not been easy but it has been one of the most enlightening and strengthening  experiences of her life. Precious says that she has been changed from the inside out because of this of major and that she will walk out of this university better than what she walked in because of the knowledge she has gained. She is a McNair scholar, gospel choir member, leader in Born Again Ministries and has served as the Resident Assistant of the Black Scholars floor, and a Multi-Cultural Awareness chair. She will be attending Cal State University Fullerton's Master's of Social Work Program in Fall 2011.   






bashirBashir Hassan is a double major in Black Studies and Sociology graduating senior who will be continuing on to graduate school at Cornell University to pursue a Master of Professional Studies in African and African-American Studies. Hassan received a fully funded financial package to accompany him in his academic pursuit. Bashir is also founder and artistic director of Amatory Dance Crew, a hip-hop fusion style dance team that incorporates various styles of dance to allow full expression of collaborative soul expression.  As an aspiring performer/scholar Bashir plans to pursue career in entertainment as well as academia.
