Candice Lyons, Black Star Assistant Professor. Professor Lyons is an interdisciplinary scholar whose research stages queer re-evaluations of the U.S. slavery archive and is rooted in Black Queer Theory, Black Feminist Theory, African American Women's History, and Slavery Studies. She is the author of the award-winning Feminist Studies piece "Behind the Scenes: Elizabeth Keckley, Slave Narratives, and the Queer Complexities of Space" (2021). Lyons is currently completing a monograph that traces the ways enslaved and free nineteenth-century Black people in the United States navigated both gender and sexuality.
