African American MusicAssociate Professor in the Department of Black Studies. He received his BA in Music Education from Southern University, Baton Rouge, and his MA and D.M.A. in Music Composition at the University of Texas at Austin. His compositions have been performed by Metropolitan Opera diva Barbara Conrad, choreographer Chuck Davis, jazz artists Jullian Cannonball Adderly and Alvin Batiste, and actor Moses Gunn. Dr. Stewart is the author of African American Music: An Introduction. He has published articles on the aesthetic and theoretical significance of African American music, and is currently working on a manuscript dealing with Vernacular Harmony.
